Today, iconic South African business, Debonairs Pizza officially opened its milestone 600th
restaurant in Botshabelo near Bloemfontein, Free State.
This local brand has developed from a single outlet in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal to a network of restaurants in 15 countries, extending across Africa and as far as the United Arab Emirates, and now on Botshabelo’s doorstep.
“On our opening night we sold 8 pizzas; Debonairs Pizza now sells about 10 pizzas per minute, which is indicative of the brand’s success in making pizza accessible to the broader South African market,” said Craig Mackenzie, Debonairs Pizza founder. “And to think, at our very first strategy
meeting in 1992 we agreed that 50 outlets in South Africa would be a stretch target. It is with great pride that we witness how the brand has flourished beyond all expectations throughout the country and beyond.”
The franchise has grown a R6 000 capital investment to a multimillion rand business today, a legacy that now forms part of the Botshabelo community.
As part of this legacy, the franchisees will support Botshabelo Youth Care Centre through the Doughnation initiative, which bakes all fresh left-over dough into pizza breads and donates it to local charities. This initiative currently donates in excess of 30 000 pizza breads monthly; and this continues to grow as the brand grows.
“We’re thankful for the opportunity to boost the community by creating jobs, for the chance to share our taste with the local customers, and the humbling support from the community,” said Botshabelo franchisee, Tumi Mohlahlo.
But the celebrations do not end with the official opening. On Monday, 28 November 2016, local restaurants will give away 100 free pizzas in celebration of its 600th
restaurant opening in its 25th
year. The first 100 patrons at each restaurant who purchase a Real Deal Pizza
will receive a second promotional Real Deal pizza and a 500ml coke free.
“We are looking forward to celebrating with our loyal consumers who have invited us into their communities and into their homes,” said Terry Boardman, Group Operations Services Executive for Famous Brands.
“Reaching a milestone of 600 Debonairs Pizza restaurants is a testament to our pioneering spirit, which will also pave the way for continued growth of the brand throughout South Africa to ensure that Debonairs Pizza is accessible in every community and in every home.”
